Fado (translated as destiny or fate) is a music genre which can be traced from the 1820s in Portugal, but probably with much earlier origins. In popular belief, Fado is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor. However, in reality Fado is simply a form of song which can be about anything, but must follow a certain structure.

The music is usually linked to the Portuguese word saudade (that has no match in English but it could be understood as nostalgia felt while missing someone), a word describing a sentiment. Another similar English translation can be to pine for something or someone. (source wikipedia)

“Imagine a woman completely dressed in black, by the seaside. A little bit far out at sea, she sees the boat where her lover is going away.
Deeply in her soul, she wants to believe one day she is going to hold him.
But in the other hand, she hears voices telling her he won’t come back. She begins to cry. She feels pain inside and stars singing.”
"Portuguese Soul Music"

Fado is music. Fado is feelings.
Fado is always related to “Saudade” - a Portuguese word to express the feeling of loss and pain that has no translation.

Welcome to fado.
Fell free to use your sound and video options.
Please done some tips if you like our island.

This house is devoted to the world of fado and the guitar, was inaugurated this night and pretend to be a reference between Rl™ and Sl primary portuguese culture, still up to date and so powerful that crossed frontiers and it's a very known style of music. This House of Fado is located in Cassandra of Azores (153, 181). It has a great museum with a permanent exhibition, restaurant and more where you can attend a seminar for lyricists and a firm of tests for interpreters.

The "Saudade & Fado" house was build to provide a tribute to Fado and his cult, honoring authors and performers. The space shows some important stars of the story of fado through a unique environment.

The Museum of Fado is open to the public, to all, because SL™ is really suppose to be e multi cultural place :).
